European Art Course
by Chris Herdel

Chris is a painter and photographer from Prague. He is also teaching as a free lecturer for  European Art at academy of fine arts in Prague and other venues such as Mimar Sinan University in İstanbul.

The course is divided in a theoretical (art history-history of Europe) and a practical part (drawing / painting/ paperworks)

1. Art history:  European Tradition and Modernity

In the theoretical part of the workshop significant pictures of the European art history are analyzed. This is helpful for the students own research of his personal relation to the huge pictorial heritage in Europe produced in the last 3000 years.  Ongoing traditions of the European iconography are explained with the help of videoprojections.  These artworks  reflect the development of European hıstory of which examples will be given.

Modern art is developed in Europe at the turn of the 20th century,  erasing step by step the traditional patterns  and replacing them by concepts drawn from either primitive cultures or the old testament. The modern approach of the last 100 years until nowadays is explained in the talks explaining the modern image as a metaphor for modern society.

In the last part of the workshop philosophy and criteria on how to assess contemporary artworks will be given.

2. Practice

İn the practical part participants are guided towards an active understanding of the image.

A person can only produce the image which vaguely exists in his memory. By actively drawing or painting the student / participant is giving a shape to his “vague memories”. By doing so he is enabled to focus on his identity and psychological status.  In this way painting is a good means for resetting the own psychological health, a sort of psychotherapy.
